Local Attractions and Activities
Our holiday home is situated at Boat of Garten, on the 4 star Thistle Award Boat of Garten Holiday Park, which has a small children's play area and a coin operated launderette. We are situated in the Cairngorms National Park, just an 8 minute drive from the popular village of Aviemore, and similar distances from Carrbridge, Grantown-on-Spey, Dulnain Bridge and Nethy Bridge. Rather than duplicate information from other sources we felt it would be more appropriate to include links to some of the "official" websites that have been painstakingly researched and compiled to cater exactly for what visitors want and need in this area. www.visitaviemore.com is a goldmine of information on places to visit and activities catering for all tastes and abilities.
Here are just a few selected examples of what's available in the area:
For bird watchers -
Boat of Garten's most famous residents, the Ospreys can be seen at the RSPB's Osprey sanctuary which is just a couple of minutes away. They are a sight to behold if you're lucky enough to see them catching fish in the surrounding lochs and rivers. There are many other rare and threatened species of birds that thrive in this area, such as the Ptarmigan, Scottish Crossbill, Golden Eagle, Red Kite, Dotterel, Capercaillie, and Crested Tit to name but a few.
For Railway enthusiasts -
Why not take a steam train ride to Aviemore and enjoy a car free day out? Boat of Garten station is just a 5 minute walk from the holiday park. Trains run between Aviemore to the south and Broomhill to the north, the latter having been the location for filming scenes of Glenbogle station in the popular Monarch of the Glen television series, which is currently re-running on ITV3. A little further to the north east brings you to Dufftown which is the southern end of the Keith and Dufftown Railway. Please check their websites for dates and times beforehand.
For a family day out -
The unique Landmark Forest Adventure themed park at Carrbridge, is just a few minutes drive away. Many other attractions and activities on this page make great family days out. Why not try something completely new?
For walkers -
The Speyside way is a stone's throw from the park and there are many miles of well kept footpaths in this part of the Cairngorms National Park. You could walk up Cairngorm Mountain then travel back down on the funicular railway. Please be aware that access to the plateau is not permitted beyond the top station outside of ski season due to conservation restrictions.
For cyclists -
Sustrans route 7 passes through the village. There are miles of well maintained cycle routes around here. Aviemore is just a short ride to the south where a large choice of routes awaits you to explore, many of which enjoy the peace and tranquility of being well away from the roads. Cycle and equipment hire is available locally or at places like Aviemore. Advance booking of hire equipment is recommended due to the ever increasing popularity of cycling holidays in this area. A secure storage shed is available for cycles to the rear of the holiday home. (We hope to have some contact details for cycle hire here soon).
For mountain bikers -
There is the Forestry Commission's acclaimed Laggan Wolftrax centre a short(ish) drive away. You will not be disappointed! There are many miles of off-road tracks to enjoy in the local area, too.
For golfers -
Take your pick! This part of Scotland is a golfer's paradise.
For fun on the water -
The accredited centre at nearby Loch Morlich has superb facilities. There is a sandy beach here too and free wi-fi in the upstairs cafe. (The picture at the top of this page is Loch Morlich in February '09)
For fishermen and women -
Does the world famous River Spey, noted for the quality of its Salmon and Trout stocks, really need any further introduction? We would ask all those partaking in fishing activities to take particular care not to leave discarded equipment, especially weights and lengths of line, lying around in view of a potentially tragic incident that occurred recently. Thank you for your consideration.
For winter sports -
The nearby Cairngorm Mountain centre offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Scotland.
*** APRIL '10 - PLENTY OF SNOW STILL HERE! ***
Further afield, the other scottish ski centres can all be reached within an hour or so. Secure ski storage and a drying room will be available shortly at the holiday home. There's also the Cairngorm Sled-dog centre for a unique way to visit the mountains at any time of year - no snow required!
For nature lovers -
The Cairngorms enjoy a unique sub-Arctic micro climate in the British Isles (there are sometimes odd patches of snow visible on the north facing mountain slopes in the Summer months and snow can fall at any time of year) and as such are home to rare species such as the Ptarmigan and Great Britain's only Reindeer herd.
For somewhere to shop -
The regional shopping centre is at Inverness, which is approximately 30 miles to the north.
